Disaster Communication Forum organized within the scope of "One and a Half Degrees" Climate Literacy and Disaster Communication program was moderated by Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy, Rector of Selçuk University.

Selçuk University Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy, RTÜK Supreme Council Chairman Ebubekir Şahin, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken, Prof. Dr. İlhan Çiftci, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Tuğrul Polat, Presidential Communications Directorate Konya Regional Director Taner Taşkıran, deans, academic staff, media managers and representatives, journalists and students attended the forum which was  organized by the Presidential Communication Presidency, Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), Konya Metropolitan Municipality, Selçuk University, Necmettin Erbakan University and Social Innovation Agency at Taş Bina Culture and Art.

On February 6, 2023, after the earthquake, journalists who were active in the field and the work of Konya Metropolitan Municipality in the disaster area were discussed in the forum moderated by Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy.

At the opening of the program, Selçuk University Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy said that the benevolence of the people of Konya was once again revealed in the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, and that one of the important institutions working sacrificially in this process was RTÜK. Stating that disinformation can cause significant negativities in disasters, Prof. Dr. Aksoy thanked RTÜK and press employees for their efforts in combating disinformation. Prof. Dr. Aksoy stated that the University is among the educational institutions with the best Faculty of Communication and that they strive to train well-equipped communicators.

Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay stated that there is a massacre in Palestine and that the international media uses the term "killed" for those who died in Israel and "deceased" for those who died in Palestine. Stating that after the earthquake in Hatay, they saw that communication and news transmission were vital, Altay said: "It is very valuable to ensure accurate communication. We all witnessed there that many people died because of a 'dam collapsed' story. We saw how fast false information spreads and how people are dragged into panic without confirming it."

RTÜK Supreme Council Chairman Ebubekir Şahin stated that disinformation is frequently encountered in the communication and journalism sector. Şahin said, "Within the framework of the One and a Half Degree Program, we will discuss journalism and communication activities in disasters and extraordinary moments, which is a subject we attach great importance to. Disinformation about disasters is frequently encountered in the communication and journalism sector. We experience information pollution, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unwittingly. The public's right to receive accurate news can be prevented from time to time. As RTÜK, we are very sensitive about this issue."

Yeni Şafak Online Editor-in-Chief Ersin Çelik and Ensonhaber Anchor Taha Hüseyin Karagöz shared their knowledge and experiences with the participants. Habertürk Anchor Mehmet Akif Ersoy participated in the Forum online from Tel Aviv, where he works, and shared his experiences and the situation in the region.

Within the scope of "One and a Half Degree" Climate Literacy and Disaster Communication program, trainings such as "climate literacy and terminology", "basic principles of climate journalism", "disaster literacy and disaster communication", "podcast, infographic and fiction workshops" were provided.

Designed as a scientific training and skill development platform for young communicators in the field of ecology, Bir Buçuk Derece aims to teach the basic concepts of ecology in the communication sector, to prevent disinformation about climate and disasters, and to enable young communicators to gain skills with this program where 30 young communicators are selected.
