Awareness walk for 'World Disability Day' at Selçuk University
Selçuk University (SU) Disabled Student Unit Coordinatorship and SU Students Without Disabilities Community (SET) organized an awareness walk on the occasion of World Disability Day.
Selçuk University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken, Disabled Student Unit Coordinator Zeliha Üzümcü, lecturers and students attended the event held at Alaeddin Keykubat Campus.
Selçuk University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken said in his statement that they have carried out important studies at the point of barrier-free university. In this context, Prof. Dr. Eken stated that they carry out events and activities in order to raise awareness and said, "The organized walk is one of the activities we have planned. In fact, there are no disabled students or disabled people. There is only a disadvantaged group. All humanity is included in this. It is up to all of us to turn disadvantage into advantage. We need to identify disadvantages, find solutions and equalize conditions. We aim to make our students equal in education, social life and other issues, especially in terms of benefiting from all the opportunities of our University. This takes some time. This time needs to be utilized very well. At this point, we have taken important steps within our University, especially within our Coordinatorship, and we will continue to do so."
Prof. Dr. Eken added that in this context, the newly established SU Students without Disabilities Community has started its activities.
Selçuk University Disabled Student Representative and National Athlete Ömer Faruk Gönül stated that they are individuals with differences and said, "Although there are obstacles, we can do stronger work by overcoming obstacles. Our friends should never stop where they are. No matter what the conditions are, there is always something to do to move forward in all circumstances. In order to change the conditions for the better, we need a different perspective and power of thought, as well as contact with our heart."
