'Breast Cancer Awareness' seminar at Selçuk University
Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine organized "Breast Cancer Awareness" seminar on the importance of early diagnosis and diagnosis of breast cancer within the scope of 100 Events in the 100th Anniversary of the Republic.
Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. İmran Aslan, Corporate Communication Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Özgür, Health, Culture and Sports Department Nutrition Services Branch Manager Özgül Usta, academic and administrative staff and students attended the seminar held at Sultan Alparslan Cultural Center.
The seminar moderated by Prof. Dr. Orhan Önder Eren was attended by Prof. Dr. Hande Köksal, Faculty Member of the Department of General Surgery, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emine Uysal, Faculty Member of the Department of Radiology and Lecturer of the Department of Medical Oncology. Assist. Dr. Serkan Yıldırım gave the lecture.
In his speech at the opening of the seminar, Prof. Dr. Orhan Önder Eren said that breast cancer has a 2.5 percent mortality rate in women. Stating that it is an important and common disease, Eren said, "We know that it is a public health problem. When we look at the level of mortality, unfortunately, it always competes with lung cancer. Under Turkish conditions, it is far ahead of other cancers."
Prof. Dr. Hande Köksal stated that early diagnosis of cancer saves lives and said, "Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Turkey with a rate of 11.7 percent. This data is a new information announced by our Minister of Health, Mr. Fahrettin Koca. It is seen in one out of every 8 women in Turkey as in the whole world. Therefore, breast cancer screening is of great importance." In his presentation, Köksal made explanations on non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors, screening, symptoms, examination, stages, treatment planning and follow-up.
Lecturer Prof. Dr. Serkan Yıldırım Prof. Dr. Serkan Yıldırım explained the risks associated with breast cancer and risk-reducing factors. Yıldırım stated that giving birth, breastfeeding and physical activities are among the factors that reduce the occurrence of cancer in women, and that age, gender, race, height and geographical conditions can also be effective in cancer formation.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emine Uysal, in her presentation on screening techniques and analysis in breast cancer, added that breast cancer is among the cancer types that respond most to treatment.
