International The Oghuzs and The Seljuks In Central Asia Symposium (18-20 June 2025/Urgench-Uzbekistan)

3/19/2025 Institute of Seljuk Studies

The history of the Seljuks in Central Asia has not yet been a subject of scientific research either in Turkey or Uzbekistan. This is because researchers and specialists on Seljuk history have primarily focused on the period after the Battle of Dandanaqan in 1040, which marks the emergence of the Seljuk State. Before the establishment of the Seljuk State in 1040, the Oghuz and Seljuk Turks had spent around 80 years searching for a new homeland in Khorezm and Transoxiana.

In 961, when the capital of the Oghuz state was moved from Yangikent to Jand, the Oghuz began migrating toward Khorezm and Transoxiana. Up until the Battle of Dandanaqan, the Oghuz tribes lived in these geographical regions. After the establishment of the Seljuk State in 1040, the history of the migration of the Turks from Transoxiana to Anatolia began. However, historical events that took place before the formation of the Seljuk State and the process of its fragmentation also occurred specifically in Central Asia.

Furthermore, the Seljuk period is seen as a time when Islamic civilization flourished. From this, it can be said that there are many aspects that connect the Turkic peoples living in the territory of the historical Seljuk State. Some of these aspects still require deep research and exploration to this day.

Therefore, we would like to inform you that on June 18-20, 2025, the Department of “History” of the Faculty of Socio-Economic Sciences at Urgench State University will hold an international scientific and practical conference on the topic “The Oghuz and Seljuks in Central Asia”.
