A program called “Perhaps You Are Undisabled” organized at SU

Selcuk University Disabled Student Unit Coordinator organized a program called “Maybe You Are Undisabled” on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Selcuk University Disabled Student Unit Coordinator Zeliha Üzümcü, who made the opening speech of the program called "Maybe You Are Without Disabilities" held at the Sultan Alparslan Cultural Center, gave information about the projects implemented in the last 2 years. Üzümcü stated that the coordinatorship has been made more accessible and thus the accessibility of students has increased. Barrier-Free Information Center was established together with the Information Technologies Department. Barrier-Free Access Map, Seljuk Access Community was created. At the end of all these works, Selçuk University was awarded with 9 flags for the first time in its field in the Barrier-Free Universities Competition, which is held regularly every year by YÖK.”

“WE ARE ALL TOGETHER”

After watching the Concert prformed by Turkish Music Choir created in 2022 with the participation of students with special needs, Selçuk University Dilek Sabancı State Conservatory Director Prof. Dr. Oguz Karakaya took the turn to give his speech. Providing information about the studies and courses applied for the first time in the field of disability, Prof. Dr. Karakaya said, “Without separating any of our siblings, all of our students are the pearls of this University. All of them are precious to us, when we come together, we will try to do our part by saying 'We are all together' as students, teachers, academic and administrative staff."

“13 BOOKS VOICED WITH THE AUDIOBOOK APPLICATION”

In the program, the participants closed their eyes and listened to samples of the works performed for the audio library prepared in cooperation with the Department of Interior Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and Design and the Coordinator of the Disabled Student Unit. Giving information about the workshops and book voiceovers, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design Prof. Dr. Rabia Köse Doğan said, “Within the scope of the audio book application, 13 books were voiced by our 13 volunteer students and brought to our University. Anyone can access these books.”

“OUR DISABLED STUDENTS CAN REACH THE RESULTS WITHOUT OBSTACLES”

Dean of Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Yavuz Selvi said, “As part of the project, when our disabled student at Selçuk University gets sick, when he needs treatment, we call our friends who are involved in the project and ask them to help them assigning one of our friends. Our friend gets the examinations done together with the disabled individual, reaches his doctor, helps him get his treatment, and as a result, our disabled student reaches the result without any more obstacles.”

“OUR UNIVERSITY RECEIVES 9 FLAG AWARDS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY”

Selcuk University Faculty of Fine Arts Lecturer Prof. Dr. After Mehmet Lütfi Hidayetoğlu gave information about the "Smart Cabin-Smart Wardrobe project for the Visually Impaired". Selçuk University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken said, “From the day we took office, under the leadership of our Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy, we started to work to remove the barriers of our students with disabilities and to offer them a better university environment. For the first time in its history, Selçuk University received 9 flag awards. Important strides were made in terms of being an exemplary and pioneering University in terms of accessibility in space, accessibility in education, and accessibility to socio-cultural activities. Thanks to the automation system for our disabled students, which was put into practice for the first time in Turkey, it is now very easy for our disabled students to reach their advisors, relevant people and management. We are the University that allocates the most staff for the disabled among universities. Selçuk University will continue to write epics.”

At the end of the program which was also attended by Selcuk University General Secretary Prof. Dr. Kamil Beşoluk, a certificate of appreciation was presented to the academicians, administrative staff and students who contributed to the activities of the Selçuk University Disabled Student Unit Coordinator. Ömer Faruk Gönül, Disabled Student Representative and Head of the Disabled Student Community (SET), founded in 2021, thanked Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken and presented flowers.
