Selcuk University Cellular Immunology Laboratory opened
The Cellular Immunology Laboratory within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Selçuk University was opened with the participation of Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy.
In addition to Rector Aksoy, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Emrullah Eken, Prof. Dr. İlhan Çiftci, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Tuğrul Polat, Secretary General Prof. Dr. Kamil Beşoluk, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Prof. Dr. Seyfullah Haliloğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof. Dr. Semahat Küçükkolbaşı, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Emine Arslan, academic and administrative staff and students attended the opening ceremony.
In his speech at the ceremony, Selçuk University Rector Prof. Dr. Metin Aksoy stated that they are happy to have brought an important laboratory to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Prof. Dr. Aksoy thanked those who contributed to the commissioning of the laboratory and wished the unit to be beneficial for the University.
Making a statement about the laboratory, Selçuk University Vaccine Development Application and Research Center Director and Veterinary Faculty Microbiology Department Head Prof. Dr. Osman Erganiş said that the studies carried out at universities have an important place in the development of countries.
In this context, Prof. stated that, as the team of SU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Vaccine Development Application and Research Center, they have been working mainly on developing animal vaccines in the last 30-35 years. Dr. Erganiş said, “We needed to study cellular immunology, which is another branch of vaccine studies. In our new laboratory, we will conduct cell-based immune system measurement studies in a cleaner and more sensitive area. We carry out bacteriological and immunological studies, but the area where you will study cellular immunity must be cleaner and more sensitive. It should be like a cell culture laboratory and an operating room. That's why we tried to build this laboratory. We also need to measure the cellular immunity of vaccines. We also need detailed equipment to measure under better conditions. After studying the Covid vaccine, we personally realized the importance of this. We carried out some of the work we could not do here at different universities. Now we have new TÜBİTAK projects. “As a team, we are very happy that we will carry out the cellular branch of our research from those projects in our own laboratory.”

Stating that cellular immunity should also be measured in animal vaccines, Prof. Dr. Erganiş said, "In Covid, antibodies were measured some time after vaccination. We already measure antibodies. Immunologically, it is one of the things we have done best for years. The importance of the cellular arm is in many studies, but it is not routinely measured in hospitals. We can give the example of AIDS disease about the importance of cellular immunity. When cellular immunity collapses in AIDS, we see that people die from very simple infections. Therefore, cellular immunity is very important for a vaccine or immunity against infection. We will be able to measure immunity at the cellular level here, where we can measure cellular immunity serologically, which we can do less or less. I wish that our inaugurated laboratory will hopefully be instrumental in many new publications and projects."
