One thousand 350 earthquake victims were treated at Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine Hospital

Selçuk University (SU) Faculty of Medicine Hospital treated 1,350 earthquake victims who were rescued in the region hit by two major earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş.

SU Faculty of Medicine Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Mustafa Koplay stated that as a hospital, they started the first preparations immediately after the earthquake that affected 10 provinces centered in Kahramanmaraş and that they contacted the Provincial Directorate of Health from the first day: "In this process, we identified our volunteer healthcare professionals. In the first team, we sent a medical team of 35 people to Kahramanmaraş. Afterwards, we sent orthopedics, neurosurgery, gynecology and obstetrics, and intensive care teams to the provinces in need, which the Provincial Directorate of Health deemed appropriate. We are in constant communication with our teammates in the region and found a solution to meet their immediate needs."

          “WE MADE THE NECESSARY PREPARATIONS IN OUR HOSPITAL”

Prof. Dr. Koplay stated that within the scope of the preparations carried out at SU Faculty of Medicine Hospital, they first created a patient triage area in the emergency department:“We have also made the necessary plans in case of a request for personnel from the region. We planned our inpatient service floors to be suitable for our patients. We postponed elective surgeries, considering the condition of patients who may require intensive care in the first week. While making other plans, we ensured continuity without disrupting the current operation of our hospital. "We made preparations to meet the shelter and personal needs of our earthquake-affected citizens by meeting with our social services unit and Meliha Ercan Guest House."

         “WE CREATED A 'CRUSH INJURY' TEAM IN OUR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT”

Prof. Dr. Koplay stated that they established a "Crush injury" team in order to accelerate the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients coming to the emergency department: “Citizens who were affected by the earthquake started to apply to the hospital on the first day of the earthquake. As a result of our planning, our patients' consultations were performed on-site and on time and they were sent to the clinics where they would be hospitalized. All necessary procedures were carried out for the treatment of patients requiring medical treatment or surgery. In this process, we immediately contacted the Department of Psychiatry and established a team for psychosocial support and ensured that our psychologists took care of our earthquake-affected citizens. "Our 'Trauma and Disaster' polyclinics, which provide psychosocial support for our adult and child patients affected by the earthquake, started to provide services in the Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Polyclinics."

“93 PATIENTS ARE TREATED IN OUR IN-BED SERVICE”

Emphasizing that in order to find quick solutions to non-disaster health problems, earthquake victims have allocated additional quotas in all polyclinics, allowing them to be examined without an appointment. Dr. Mustafa Koplay said, “In this context, we planned the treatment processes of 18 earthquake victims with chronic kidney failure who came to Konya as guests and did not cause them to suffer. 1,350 earthquake victims applied to our hospital and 151 patients were admitted to the inpatient ward. Our inpatients are actively followed by all our other departments, especially the orthopedics and traumatology departments. 7 deliveries were made, and 58 of our inpatients were discharged. "We met the needs of the 93 patients in the ward and our relatives by staying in constant communication.’’

Prof. Dr. Koplay added that the places where the earthquake victims, whose treatment was completed, would stay before being discharged were organized through the Konya Governorship and they were sent to the relevant places.
