Savatra will increase the recognition of Konya

It is aimed to contribute to the brand value of Konya and increase its international recognition with the excavations carried out in the Ancient City of Savatra under the presidency of Assoc. Professor Ilker Işık, Selcuk University Faculty of Letters Faculty Member.

Çhe excavations of the Ancient City of Savatra, which were initiated with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2021, are being carried out on behalf of Selcuk University. The studies funded with the support of Konya Metropolitan Municipality and Karatay Municipality are an important project that brings Selcuk University and local governments together in a common denominator. The Ancient City of Savatra has the most comprehensive excavation project in Konya after Çatalhöyük, which is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, and is on its way to becoming an important tourist destination site.

Savatra, with its kilometers-long underground tunnels, mosaic areas, theater, huge mound structure and historical structures waiting to come to light under the ground, is a residential area that gives Konya the decorative urban atmosphere of Antiquity. Savatra, which has always maintained its strategic position and was a military garrison city during the Roman and Byzantine periods, has also become a stopping point for Turkish soldiers serving as legionnaires in the Byzantine armies.

With the projects prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Konya Metropolitan Municipality, Selcuk University and Karatay Municipality, the Ancient City of Savatra has the potential to contribute to the brand value of Konya and increase its international recognition.

The Turkopol (Turkoglu) inscription, which mentions the Turkish name in Anatolia and proves the existence of Turks before 1071, was found here. Savatra, which became the homeland of the Crimean Tatar Turks who fled from the Russian persecution in the 1890s, is waiting for its visitors with its appearance that combines ancient and modern Deconstruction.
