Injured golden eagle being treated at Selcuk University

A golden eagle found immobile in Konya's Meram district was brought to Selcuk University Veterinary Faculty Animal Hospital for treatment. Following clinical and radiological examination, shotgun pellets were found in its head and a fracture in its bone. The eagle is planned to be released back into its natural habitat within 10 days.

Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Alkan, Chief Physician of Selcuk University Veterinary Faculty Animal Hospital, noted that they undertake the treatment of animals brought by both citizens and relevant institutions within the scope of the protocol signed with Konya Regional Directorate of Forestry regarding wildlife.

Clinical and radiological examinations were performed for the golden eagle found by citizens in Meram district on February 2 and brought to the Hospital. The examinations revealed an old fracture in the right wing bone and a shotgun pellet in its head. Prof. Dr. Alkan stated that since the pellet was not in a life-threatening area and did not affect vital functions, no surgical intervention was deemed necessary, saying "After conducting flight tests, we plan to discharge it when it becomes capable of living independently in nature."  

After completing the treatment and rehabilitation process, the eagle will be handed over to the Regional Directorate of Forestry teams and released into its natural habitat.

Prof. Dr. Alkan explained that the golden eagle is mostly used for wolf hunting in Central Asian countries such as Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, and also finds habitat in our country, stating "Citizens who encounter such animals can apply to our Hospital for treatment. No fee is charged for this service."
