Erol Güngör was born in Kırşehir in 1938. His father was Abdullah Sabri Bey from Hacıhafızoğulları and his mother was Zeliha Gülsen Hanım. Güngör completed his primary and secondary education in Kırşehir. He learned the ottoman script during his secondary school years and took Arabic lessons during his high school years. During this period, he began to read the main works of Islamic-Turkish cultural history. After studying at Istanbul University Faculty of Law for a while, he transferred to Istanbul University Faculty of Literature with the encouragement of Mümtaz Tarhan and graduated from the Department of Philosophy.
In 1957, while he was still a student, Erol Güngör started working as an officer in his own faculty. During these years, he learned English as well as French. He worked as a laboratory assistant to visiting professor Hains and translated his lectures into Turkish. When he graduated from the Faculty of Literature in 1961, he was appointed as an assistant to the Chair of Experiential Psychology. During his assistantship, he turned to social psychology, a new branch of science in Turkey. He translated the works of Krech and Grutchfield, who were important representatives of this discipline, into Turkish under the title Social Psychology. In addition to his academic studies, he continued to write articles in magazines and newspapers.
He received his doctorate in 1965 with his thesis titled Aesthetic Organization in Verbal Buildings, prepared under the direction of Mümtaz Turhan. In 1966, he traveled to the United States upon the invitation of Kenneth Hammond, a social psychologist from the University of Colorado. He participated in the research of an international team at the Institute of Behavioral Sciences of this university. In 1968, he returned to Turkey and started to teach social psychology courses at the Chair of Experiential Psychology. He became an associate professor in 1970 with his thesis titled The Role of Language in the Resolution of Interpersonal Conflicts, which he prepared during his military service. Güngör, who made social psychology an important field in Turkey with his lectures at the university and his scientific publications, took part in various commissions of the Prime Ministry Planning Organization, the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture. In 1978, he became a professor of social psychology with his presentation thesis titled Research on the Psychology of Values, in which he analyzed the relations between the general value system and moral values from a sociopsychological perspective. In 1982, he was appointed rector of Selçuk University. He died on April 24, 1983 in Istanbul during this duty.
