The abbreviation ECTS stands for European Credit Acquisition and Transfer System and is called ECTS (European Credit Accumulation and Transfer System) in English. The main aim of ECTS is to establish the cooperation between higher education institutions on solid and transparent foundations in a Europe where national borders have been removed. ECTS acts as a bridge between institutions and provides a wide range of options to students. The system creates a common platform for success and learning levels, making it easier for institutions to evaluate success. Thus, interpretation of national higher education at international level becomes easier.

The European Credit Collection and Transfer System is a student-centered system defined according to the task and workload assigned to the student in order to achieve the goals set by the education program. In the European system, the objectives of the education program will be defined mainly according to the acquisitions and skills to be obtained at the end of the learning process. The European Credit Collection and Transfer System makes it possible to compare and measure learning processes, and ensures that the credit value appraised for learning is transferred from one institution to another.

ECTS credit is a number describing the amount of homework, work and responsibility imposed on a student to complete a course. This number expresses the amount of study of that course in proportion to the total amount of work that must be done in a year.
